Video Games

The latest data from the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA) shows that women now make up 48% of Australian gamers and 22% of Australian developers, with 4% as trans, non-binary or gender diverse.

The SAFC is proud to support South Australia’s thriving games industry through our SA VGD Rebate and through events such as our SAGE: SA Game Exhibition, a super showcase of South Australia’s video game development sector which this year attracted a record 3,000+ people over one weekend to experience the best in South Australian-made video games.

Check out a selection of female-led games that exhibited at the SA Game Exhibition (SAGE) 2025 last month.

The Sacred Acorn

Cute meets chaos when a small squirrel with ancient powers embarks on an epic action-adventure to save the world from impending doom. Master ancient powers and battle brutal bosses in this deceptively cute top-down metroidvania with stunning hand drawn art and a bespoke, atmospheric soundtrack.

Made by small indie studio A Few Dragons, the team includes a female writer and lead 2D artist – both playing key roles to see the game through to its release last year.

Beach Bums

It’s Day of the Tentacle meets Where’s Wally. Beach Bums is a point and click game that begs the player to get togs back on bums after a tidal wave strips the beach.

Coastal Derrieres, the small studio behind this cheeky game, is led by Creative Director Jazz King.

Taming Yore Dragon

Taming Yore Dragon is a puzzle adventure game designed to teach players about mental health and anxiety through interesting gameplay. Embark on an epic fantasy quest to restore colour and life to an abandoned world.

Studio founder and director April Benjamin spoke to Channel 9 at SAGE 2025 about bringing her experience as a psychologist to My Colourful Mind to develop video games that incorporate evidence based anxiety management strategies.

ANVILHEART

This Screen Australia funded game follows a vagrant blacksmith whose desperate quest for a better life is exploited by a twisted mastermind, forcing them to balance their new reputation for heroism with a secret that could shatter it all.

One of two main creatives behind Towerpoint Games, Emma Waters acts as lead programmer, writer and game and narrative designer, using skills she’s acquired since she started developing games as a hobby in 2012.

The Troll and the Witch’s House

In another Screen Australia funded title, the titular little troll awakens to find themselves captured in a strange house. In the process of trying to escape, a tragic story comes to light through mysteries unravelling.

This delightful point and click puzzle mystery is the work of solo developer Ditte Wad Andersen.
