Apply now: AFTRS Intro to Producing & Screen Business for regional creatives

The SAFC is supporting up to two South Australian screen practitioners from regional and/or remote areas to attend the Adelaide AFTRS Intro to Producing and Screen Business course in June 2025.
The course, which is presented by AFTRS in partnership with The Mercury, will run over two days from 28 – 29 June 2025 at The Mercury. Up to two selected regional applicants will be offered a fully subsidised place in the course along with travel and accommodation assistance.
In this Intro to Producing & Screen Business course, you’ll explore all facets of the Producer role and their responsibilities from the conception of a screen project through to bringing it to market. You will learn about intellectual property and developing screen ideas, budgeting, below-the-line production to post-production, and screen industry trends.
Taught by Australia’s premier producers and practitioners, this course will help you become familiar with this key filmmaking role, screen business fundamentals and what makes a great producer.
This is an introductory course that covers producing and screen business basics for beginners through interactive lectures, tutorials, readings, viewings and writing exercises. No previous experience or knowledge is required.
This course is ideal for aspiring producers, film students and other filmmaking professionals looking to understand producing and screen business fundamentals. It is also ideal for media students, professionals and educators, law professionals, and professionals from other backgrounds who want to transition into the screen industry.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the various roles of a Producer and how they differ across production formats and platforms.
- Outline how a Producer leads a project from conception and funding to production and market.
- Identify a Producer’s practical responsibilities including budgeting, legals, WHS and supervising production.

Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be a South Australian resident and meet the general eligibility requirements in the SAFC Terms of Trade
- Reside in a Regional and/or Remote area as defined by the SAFC Terms of Trade*
- Have a genuine and demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the screen industry
*Regional or Remote means postcodes and suburbs outside ABS definitions of Greater Adelaide, with the exception of the Local Government Area of Playford.
SA practitioners from groups traditionally under-represented in the screen industry are encouraged to apply, including: First Nations peoples, practitioners from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds, Deaf or disabled practitioners, practitioners from socio-economic disadvantage, and practitioners from LGBTQIA+ communities.

- Expression of Interest (EOI) – 500 words maximum. Your EOI should address why you wish to attend the course, identifying the professional outcomes you wish to achieve and how it will assist with your career development.
- Current CV – 2 pages maximum.
Applications will be assessed by AFTRS based on the strength of the EOI, suitability to the workshop and identified outcomes to be achieved.
