South Australian screen sector set to shine at 2020 Ruby Awards

The South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) and the South Australian screen sector are set to shine once again at the Ruby Awards, the state’s highest honour recognising excellence in the arts and cultural sector, with four nominations announced today.

The SAFC is nominated in the category of Best Community or Regional Event or Project for Centralised, its ground-breaking initiative to boost First Nations filmmakers and screen creatives in South Australia and Northern Territory with specialised funding, support and development opportunities. Centralised was developed by the SAFC and Screen Territory together with collaborating partners Screen Australia’s Indigenous DepartmentDocumentary Australia Foundation (DAF), AFTRS Indigenous (Australian Film, Television & Radio School), ABC and NITV.

Adelaide Studios based Closer Productions is nominated for Best Work, Event or Project for Young People for its SA filmed and SAFC supported teen drama The Hunting, which premiered on SBS in 2019 as the network’s highest rating Australian drama series of all time.

The SAFC’s Disability Screen Strategy Executive Gaelle Mellis and SA filmmaking icons Scott Hicks and Kerry Heysen AM have also been shortlisted in the individual awards, which include the Geoff Crowhurst Memorial Award for individual contribution to community arts and cultural development, and the major award of the evening, the Premier’s Award for Lifetime Achievement.

The SAFC congratulates all the nominees.

In 2019 the SAFC celebrated Ruby Awards for Tilda Cobham-Hervey (Frank Ford Memorial Young Achiever Award) and Hotel Mumbai (Best Work Within a Festival) for SA key creatives producer Julie Ryan and director and co-writer Anthony Maras, with the Premier’s Award shared between late stage and screen actor Paul Blackwell (Red Dog, Deadline Gallipoli) and David Gulpilil (Storm Boy, Ten Canoes, Australia, Crocodile Dundee).
