SA film wins big at the 2019 Ruby Awards

It was a great night for South Australian film at the 2019 Ruby Awards, with three beloved SA screen actors and an SA made feature film taking top honours.

Held at the Queen’s Theatre in Adelaide on Friday November 29, the awards are South Australia’s premier event to honour the best of the state’s arts and cultural sector. 

South Australian made and SAFC supported feature film Hotel Mumbai won the award for Best Work Within a Festival for its Australian premiere at the 2018 Adelaide Film Festival, with South Australian key creatives producer Julie Ryan and director and co-writer Anthony Maras named in the honours.

Adelaide actor Tilda Cobham-Hervey (Hotel Mumbai, I Am Woman) was named the winner of the Frank Ford Memorial Young Achiever Award, named in honour of late arts patron Frank Ford.

The year’s top honours, the Premier’s Award for Lifetime Achievement, was jointly shared by two beloved South Australian actors: the late stage and screen actor Paul Blackwell (Red Dog, Deadline Gallipoli) who died in February, and screen icon David Gulpilil (Storm Boy, Ten Canoes, Australia, Crocodile Dundee).

In a rare public appearance due to ill health, Gulpilil, 66, attended the ceremony to collect the award from Premier Steven Marshall.

Both Blackwell and Gulpilil will have their names engraved on seats at Adelaide’s Festival Theatre as part of the award honour.

Named after late arts patron Dame Ruby Litchfield, the annual Ruby Awards recognise artistic excellence, creative achievement, innovation, community involvement and inspirational leadership.
