The SAFC and Writers SA are helping local authors and filmmakers start new chapters in their careers with a recent screenwriting event presented as part of Adelaide Writers Week.

Held on Monday 1 March at the South Australian Institute on North Tce, Adelaide, and hosted by SAFC Head of Production and Development Beth Neate and Writers SA Director Jessica Alice, Stories on Screen saw 16 local published authors and experienced film producers come together to learn more about screenwriting, optioning, and the process of taking books to the screen.

Adelaide Film Festival CEO and Creative Director Mat Kesting chaired a Q&A session with award winning SA producers Helen Leake AM of Dancing Road Productions, who shared stories about optioning works over her career, and Rebecca Summerton of Closer Productions, who provided a study on how the successful film Animals came together from the novel by UK writer Emma Jane Unsworth.

Authors and producers also took part in a “screen speed dating” exercise, taking 10 minute on-on-one meetings to establish new relationships, and discuss potentially working together on an existing published work or original screenplay.

Writers SA Director Jessica Alice said “We loved working with the SAFC to present Stories on Screen. It was an invaluable opportunity to introduce more writers to the film business and the optioning process, and we know that some great connections have been made between the authors and producers. We look forward to growing this event in the future and bringing more SA writers’ stories to life on screen.”
