SA businesses star in Mortal Kombat post-production line-up

Five South Australian post-production, digital and visual effects studios are set to shine and showcase their work to the world on the state’s biggest ever film production, after being selected to work on New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat.
“This is great news for jobs in South Australia with an additional 180 jobs in Post Production, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) bringing the total number of jobs created by Mortal Kombat to 799,” said Premier Steven Marshall.
“Mortal Kombat has delivered in spades on the Government’s strategic investment with the 799 jobs created exceeding the initial number of jobs by estimate by 37 per cent.”
Internationally renowned SA post-production houses Rising Sun Pictures, Mill Film, KOJO, Resin and Artisan Post Group, have all been contracted to work on the film’s PDV in 2020. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and is slated for worldwide release beginning in January 2021.
Premier Marshall congratulated all of the talented South Australians contributing to the creation of Mortal Kombat, a globally anticipated film that continues to have a significant impact on the local economy.
The appointment of these local companies to provide PDV work on the film is testament to the world-class production houses and facilities in South Australia as well as its position as having Australia’s most attractive post-production rebate.
Minister Pisoni said: “To date, production on this major global action film has provided work to 619 South Australian crew members and 675 local vendors, already superseding the initially projected total of 580 jobs.
“The talent of our PDV companies, and programs like the state’s PDV rebate, ensure that South Australia is well placed to continue to contribute to the Mortal Kombat production long after the cameras have stopped rolling.”
Mortal Kombat Producer E. Bennett Walsh said: “We are thrilled to continue our relationship with South Australia moving into post-production with five local visual effects studios.
“The standard of work completed by these companies, and all South Australians who have worked on Mortal Kombat, will attract more Hollywood productions to jump across the pond and see what SA has to offer.”
CEO of the South Australian Film Corporation, Kate Croser said: “South Australia is renowned for its post production and visual effects offering, and the work that will be created for Mortal Kombat by these five companies will serve to strengthen our reputation globally, ensuring that South Australia can continue to attract more high value international productions.”
A bold cinematic adventure based on the blockbuster videogame franchise, Mortal Kombat is a New Line Cinema presentation starring Australians Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson and Sisi Stringer as part of an international ensemble, also including Lewis Tan, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada and Max Huang.
Bringing the legendary property to life on the big screen is a world-renowned Australian creative team led by director Simon McQuoid, making his feature directorial debut and producing alongside James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring films) and Wan’s production company Atomic Monster. Todd Garner (Isn’t It Romantic, Tag) is also a producer, with Larry Kasanoff (True Lies), E. Bennett Walsh (Men in Black: International, The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Michael Clear (The Nun, Lights Out), and Jeremy Stein serving as executive producers.
