NAIDOC Week Event: A night of Firebite!
04 July 2022
In celebration of NAIDOC Week 2022, the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) is delighted to present a special screening of South Australian made First Nations vampire hunter drama series FIREBITE episodes 1 and 2, including a Q&A with cast members Shantae Barnes-Cowan, Elaine Crombie and Natasha Wanganeen and emerging screen creative and Firebite post-production crew member Keith Gilbey-Warrior.
Created, directed and written by one of Australia’s most celebrated First Nations auteur voices, Warwick Thornton (Samson and Delilah, Sweet Country) alongside Brendan Fletcher(Mad Bastards), FIREBITE is a new spin on the vampire genre, following two First Nations Australian hunters, Tyson (Rob Collins) and Shanika (South Australian rising star Shantae Barnes-Cowan) on their quest to battle the last colony of vampires in the middle of the South Australian desert – the last stronghold shipped from Britain to Australia in 1788 by the colonial superpower to eradicate the Indigenous populations.
Filmed at the SAFC’s Adelaide Studios and in Coober Pedy, the original eight-episode series premiered to critical acclaim on streaming service AMC+ in December 2021, scoring four stars across the board from The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian, Australian Book Review and Screenhub.

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
ABOUT FIREBITE
Set in a remote South Australian desert mining town, Firebite follows First Nations Australian hunters Tyson and Shanika on their quest to battle the last colony of vampires in the middle of the South Australian desert – the last stronghold of vampires shipped from Britain to Australia in 1788 by the colonial superpower to eradicate the Indigenous populations. Sheltering from the sun in the underground mines and tunnels that surround the town until the present day, the colony’s numbers and hunger is growing. War is coming. Tyson and Shanika stand vanguard to the war. But what hope does an expertly reckless man full of bravado and a 17-year-old orphan possibly have to defeat these vicious blood-thirsty parasites, when legions of warriors before them have failed? Stars Yael Stone (Orange is the New Black), Rob Collins (Cleverman, Extraction), Callan Mulvey (Avengers: End Game) and South Australian rising star Shantae Barnes-Cowan.
