My Brilliant Career rises to No.2 in Netflix’s global Top 10

The exciting new South Australian Netflix series My Brilliant Career has doubled down on its brilliant ratings success, rising to No.2 on the Netflix global Top 10 chart in its second week, attracting nearly 8 million views across 190 countries!
Following its launch on Netflix across 190 countries earlier this month, My Brilliant career debuted as the No.4 most watched English-language show globally and has continued to climb since then. It is currently sitting in the top 10 in 72 countries, including Australia (No.2), the US (No.6), the UK (No.5) and New Zealand (No.2).
The contemporary Netflix adaptation from Jungle Entertainment is developed and written by Liz Doran, and executive produced by Jungle’s Chloe Rickard, Doran and Alyssa McClelland, who also serves as the series set-up director. It is produced by South Australian producer Paul Ranford of Jetty Films.
Filmed in South Australia last year with the support of the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC), My Brilliant Career is the single biggest season of television ever made in South Australia, injecting an anticipated $19 million into the state’s economy and creating 600 jobs for South Australians across creatives, crew, cast and extras.
As one of the South Australian Heads of Production (HODs), Costume Designer Mariot Kerr has captivated viewers with her “period possible” approach to character dressing.
Speaking to 891 ABC Adelaide, Mariot said she and her team had the flexibility to “bend the rules a bit” by incorporating styles from the decades neighbouring the series’ 1900 setting when it was “true to the character.”
“It meant we could just have so much fun… Details we wanted to add because it looks good, we were able to throw that in. It was a big experiment really. What could we get away with, and what would work?” she said.
Mariot said the My Brilliant Career costume department employed over 50 people, from tailors to patternmakers to sewers, and “people coming in just to learn” – noting the period drama created an opportunity for younger crew members to hone their craft.
The stunning South Australian locations are another drawcard for the series. SA Location Manager Scott McCarten told the ABC the South East of the state in particular proved a hotspot for locations rarely seen on screen, such as Penola’s historic Yallum Park mansion, which has reported an uptick in interest since the show’s global release on Netflix.
“There’s some fantastic landscapes, there’s some fantastic architecture that sort of differs from what you find around Adelaide or up north,” Scott said.
“That first time I walked in [to Yallum Park], I don’t think I could speak for about half an hour. I just walked around with my mouth open,”
Also used in the series is Para Para Mansion at Gawler, which features as “Five Bob Downs”, the residence of Syblla’s love interest Harry. As well as filming on location at both houses, the My Brilliant Career crew painstakingly recreated many interiors at the SAFC’s Adelaide Studios, a testament to the skill of the local screen sector.
Star Philippa Northeast has praised the South Australian locations as being “like nowhere else I’ve ever experienced,” while co-star Christopher Chung told Broadsheet he was “surprised by how varied the landscape is within an hour to two hours outside of Adelaide city”.
“It was incredible to be able to be in the outback and then to be in a really lush bush area, and then to have vast plains of fields with kangaroos… I’d never felt like I’d experienced Australia like that,” he said.
