Call for EOIs: Find an unexpected way in with Australians in Film’s Short Stories session

08 October 2026

What does Hollywood’s growing interest in short stories mean for writers creating their own IP?

South Australian writers can learn more at the Australians in Film (AiF) Insider Sessions: AN UNEXPECTED WAY IN – How Short Stories Get Hollywood’s Attention (28 October, online), with up to five fully subsidised passes on offer from the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC).

Hollywood is finding its next big ideas and stories in unexpected places. Short fiction shared online is landing significant studio deals, with executives, producers and agents increasingly looking to platforms like Reddit for fresh material and their next big idea. And these stories aren’t all coming from industry insiders, opening the door to writers who’ve never set foot in a studio.

Join US producer Scott Glassgold in this special online session exploring Hollywood’s growing interest in short stories and what it means for writers creating their own IP (intellectual property). Learn how it all works, how writers can find their way in and whether it’s a passing trend or a lasting shift in how Hollywood finds its next film. Either way, it presents an exciting opportunity for writers with a great story to tell!

Scott Glassgold is the founder of 1201 Films & Books, an innovative launchpad of intellectual properties through filmed media & publishing. Glassgold also oversees Ground Control, a leading, boutique management firm for screenwriters & filmmakers. As a producer, Scott has produced such feature films as Prospect with Pedro Pascal, Hurricane Season with Forest Whitaker and Sony Pictures’ Tarot. Next up is Seasons for Amazon Studios with Drew Hancock directing, Crush for 20th Century with Julius Avery directing and Siren Head for Warner Bros. with Brian Duffield directing and writing with Zach Cregger.

Presented by Australians in Film (AiF), this 60-minute online session will be held Wednesday, 28 October at 10.30am ACDT. Practitioners interested in accessing one of the SAFC’s five subsidised course registrations are invited to submit an EOI via the SAFC’s SmartyGrants portal by 11.59pm ACDT on Monday, 19 October. Please see below for eligibility and further details.
