Hollywood came to Adelaide on Sunday 18 April, 2021 with the “black carpet” premiere of South Australian filmed blockbuster Mortal Kombat, staged by the SAFC together with Universal Pictures and Warner Bros at Event Cinemas Marion.

With a capacity crowd of 370 VIPs the black carpet was packed with special celebrity guests including Director Simon McQuoid, South Australian teen star Matilda Kimber, dozens of local extras, and representatives of the South Australian screen industry. Also joining the black carpet action was Icelandic American actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, currently in South Australia filming upcoming Stan, HBO and BBC series The Tourist.

Distinguished guests also included Premier Steven Marshall, Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni, Minister for Trade and Investment Stephen Patterson, Shadow Arts Minister Katrine Hildyard, and Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor, as well as SAFC Board Chair Peter Hanlon and Board Member Ann-Maree Davies.

The red carpet also featured an exclusive display of costumes from the film, including Sub-Zero, Mileena, Shang Tsung and an Elite Guard.

Mortal Kombat has been a powerhouse for South Australian screen industry employment, training and skilling, with 819 local cast and extras and 524 local crew employed on the production, along with hundreds more post, digital and visual effects workers and service providers – and it was a true thrill to finally see it on the big screen!

Mortal Kombat opens in cinemas nationally on 22 April, 2021.
