Arid > Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy is situated on the edge of the erosional scarp of the Stuart Ranges, on beds of sand and siltstone up to 30 metres deep and topped with a stony, treeless desert. Surrounded by a lunar landscape, dotted with shafts and mullock heaps, Coober Pedy was the favoured location for the recent films
Pitch Black, Red Planet and
Kangaroo Jack.
The Breakaways Reserve, 33kms north of Coober Pedy, is among the Australian outbackās more stunning and unique vistas.
Siam Sunset, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and
Ground Zero featured an area known locally as the Moon Plain and the Breakaways.
"The first time I saw The Breakaways, I felt like I was present at the dawn of the world".
Al Clark, Producer
Pricilla, Queen of the Desert .
The images in the locations showcase are indicative of the locations available in South Australia and to the best of its knowledge the SAFC has included areas in which commercial filming and/or still photography are allowed. The SAFC suggests that further queries regarding specific locations and any conditions related to use should be directed to the Film Services Manager who will then pass the enquiry onto South Australian based location managers who remain the most comprehensive source of information regarding locations, logistical and access information.
