Adelaide Studios

Architects by association, Grieve Gillett and Cox Richardson – received The Keith Neighbour Award for Commercial Architecture at the recent  Australian Institute of Architects’ South Australian Architecture Awards. Adelaide Studios also received two commendations in the ‘interior architecture’ and ‘heritage’ categories.

In judging the projects, the overall quality of the work is considered.
Issues include:
- how well the project meets its original intentions
- the client’s satisfaction with the project
- environmental performance and use of energy
- contribution to the advancement of architecture.

The SA Architecture Awards website reads, “Notwithstanding the high profile nature of this project coupled with a favourable budget, the Adelaide Studios have very successfully integrated world class film & television studio facilities and administrative support centre within a new addition and a modern, minimalist intervention into an imposing, previously neglected heritage listed building.”

“Fulfilling highly specialised technical requirements while catering for both transient project-based staff of varying sizes and permanent facility staff is achieved through a simple planning and circulation strategy through and around the existing building. The new studio buildings stand alone as strong architectural forms while avoiding dominating the restored heritage building via sympathetic heights, subtle colour references and positioning for function and views externally and from within the newly created courtyards. Discreet, refined detailing throughout indicates a high level of consideration and design resolution.”
